At Glam Iconic Beauty, your health and safety are our top priorities. While we are dedicated to helping you achieve beautiful, long-lasting results with our permanent makeup (PMU) services, it’s crucial to understand that not everyone is a suitable candidate for these procedures. There are certain health conditions and medications that may affect your eligibility for PMU. Below, we’ve outlined the key contraindications and other important factors to consider before booking your appointment.
Who Should Avoid Permanent Makeup Procedures?
Permanent makeup is a fantastic way to enhance your natural beauty, but for some individuals, it’s not the right option. If you have any of the following conditions, we are unable to offer you PMU services:
- Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women: Hormonal changes can affect the healing process and pigment retention, so we recommend waiting until after this period.
- Accutane Users: If you have taken Accutane (an acne medication), you must discontinue use for at least one year before undergoing any permanent makeup procedures.
- Haemophilia (Bleeding Disorder): Those with bleeding disorders are at higher risk of excessive bleeding during the procedure, which can impact pigment retention and healing.
- Trichotillomania: This condition involves compulsive pulling of body hair or scabs, which can lead to complications in healing and pigment retention.
- MRSA Infection: Due to the risk of spreading infection, those with a history of MRSA cannot undergo PMU procedures.
- Keloid Scarring History: If you have a history of keloid scarring, you must provide a doctor’s note indicating that it’s safe for you to receive PMU.
- Heart Conditions/Pacemaker/Defibrillator/Stint: Individuals with these conditions should avoid PMU due to potential complications.
- Cold Sores: If you have a history of cold sores and are planning to get lip PMU, you must take a prescription anti-viral medication (e.g., Zovirax or Acyclovir) before and after the procedure to prevent an outbreak.
- Recent Lip Fillers: If you’ve had lip fillers within the past three weeks, we recommend waiting before scheduling a PMU appointment to allow the fillers to settle.
- Active Skin Disease/Condition on the Face: Conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, severe acne, and other skin issues can interfere with the PMU process and healing. If you have any skin conditions not listed here, please consult with us before booking.
- Epilepsy: Individuals with uncontrolled epilepsy may experience complications during the procedure.
- Uncontrolled Diabetes or High Blood Pressure: These conditions can affect healing and pigment retention, making PMU unsuitable.
- Minors: We do not offer PMU services to anyone under the age of 18, even with parental consent.
- Chemotherapy or Radiation Treatments: PMU can be performed with a doctor’s approval, but the skin may be more sensitive and healing may be slower.
Medications That May Affect PMU Eligibility
Certain medications can influence how your skin heals and how well it retains pigment. If you take any of the following medications regularly, PMU may not be suitable for you:
- Blood Thinners: Medications like Triflusal (Disgren), Clopidogrel (Plavix), Prasugrel (Effient), and others listed above prevent proper pigment retention and increase the risk of excessive bleeding during the procedure.
If you are on any medications that are not listed but may affect your procedure, please discuss them with us prior to your appointment.
Other Health Considerations
Even if you don’t have any of the contraindications above, there are other conditions that may impact your PMU results. If you have any of the following conditions, consider them carefully before deciding on a procedure:
- Cirrhosis of the Liver: You may be more susceptible to infection.
- Scar Tissue: Previous PMU or tattoos may result in scar tissue that could affect the outcome of your new procedure.
- Platelet Disorders: These conditions cause increased bleeding, which can reduce pigment retention.
- Moles/Raised Areas: We cannot apply pigment to moles or raised areas, but we can work around them.
- Thyroid Medications: These can cause pigments to fade faster, requiring more frequent touch-ups.
- Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like MS, RA, or Lupus can affect how well your skin retains pigment due to the medications used to treat these disorders.
- Anaemia: Additional touch-ups may be needed to achieve the desired results.
- Tanning: Frequent tanning can alter the color of the pigment over time.
Cold Sores and PMU: Special Precautions
If you have a history of cold sores you’ll need to start taking a prescription anti-viral (Valacyclovir, Denavir (penciclovir), acyclovir (Zovirax) or Valtrex), at least ONE week BEFORE your proposed procedure. Cold sore outbreaks are often triggered by stress or trauma to the lips or skin. Therefore, if you are a carrier, a PMU procedure will likely cause an outbreak if you do not take anti-viral medication prior and post treatment. A cold sore outbreak will affect your healing process and the results of the procedure and can even lead to scarring. To ensure the best possible results for clients, we require clients not skip this step. As such, if you have a history of cold sores and do not follow these instructions, Your appointment WILL be cancelled and a cancellation fee assessed when applicable.
